Nelson Home
170 5th St. (Owned by Terry Nelson)
A tropical green frame cottage graces a lot that faces the Orman House State Park. Just blocks from the Apalachicola River this home was built in 1880. It features original tongue-and-groove heart pine floors, walls and ceilings. The ten foot ceilings and central hall once allowed sea breezes to waft through the home in the hot summer months. A recent renovation has provided it a gourmet kitchen and designer bathrooms. Current owner, Terry Nelson who lives in Tallahassee, has added his own unique style with the period furnishings and the addition of maritime elements to an intimate patio garden. Oyster tongs crown a pergola accessible from the wide and comfortable back porch from which buoys and floats dangle. Large wooden crab traps adorn the side of the home. The oars planted in the garden loom high and appear to beckon visitors “ahoy”.
